What Moves Car Insurance Rates in Sacramento

Where the car sleeps

Your garaging ZIP code is one of the biggest rating factors. Higher-density ZIPs like 95823 and 95828 usually rate higher than suburban Elk Grove or Citrus Heights. If you've moved, make sure your carrier has the new address.

Commutes on I-80, Highway 50, I-5 and 99

Long commutes into downtown, or south toward Stockton, add miles and exposure. Accurate annual mileage matters. If you now work from home or drive less, tell us and we'll re-rate you.

Repair costs on newer vehicles

Bumpers and windshields now house cameras and radar sensors that must be recalibrated after a repair. A fender-bender that once cost about $800 can now run $3,000–$5,000, and every carrier has priced that into collision coverage.

Fewer carriers writing new policies

Several major insurers paused new California auto policies while waiting on rate approvals, which left less competition. Having 20+ carriers to compare matters more when some of them aren't taking new customers.

Want the numbers? Our guide How Much Is Car Insurance in Sacramento? breaks down typical costs: about $1,800–$2,400 a year for full coverage and $700–$1,000 for minimum liability.

The Coverage We Recommend for Sacramento Drivers

✓
Liability well above the state minimum.

California's minimum is now 30/60/15. One serious injury claim can exceed that quickly, and you are personally responsible for the rest. We usually recommend 100/300/100 or higher, and an umbrella policy if you own a home.

✓
Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.

Roughly one in six California drivers carries no insurance. This coverage protects you and your passengers when the driver at fault can't pay.

✓
Collision and comprehensive on newer cars.

With repair costs where they are, both are worth keeping on a newer or financed car. On an older car worth a few thousand dollars, we'll show you when dropping collision makes sense.

✓
Rental reimbursement and roadside assistance.

Inexpensive add-ons that matter when repair shops are backed up and you still need to get to work.

Discounts Sacramento Drivers Should Ask About

California Good Driver Discount

California law requires carriers to give drivers who qualify as good drivers a discount of at least 20%. A clean record over the last few years is the single most valuable thing on your policy.

Bundling home and auto

Putting home or renters and auto with one carrier typically saves around 15%. We quote the bundle across several carriers at once. Sacramento home insurance →

Good students and teen drivers

Adding a teen is the biggest jump most family policies ever see. Good-student discounts and the right car can soften it considerably. What to expect →

Low mileage and occupation

Remote workers, retirees and second cars that rarely leave the garage often qualify for lower rates. Teachers, nurses, first responders and military members qualify for discounts with some carriers. More ways to save →

California does not allow carriers to use your credit score to price auto insurance, so shopping your policy will never hurt your credit.

Sacramento Auto Insurance — Frequently Asked Questions

What auto insurance does California require?

Since January 1, 2025, every California driver must carry at least $30,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 of property damage liability, known as 30/60/15. That is the legal floor, not a recommendation. If you cause a serious accident, costs above your limits can come out of your own pocket, so most Sacramento drivers with a home or savings should carry 100/300 or more.

How much will an at-fault accident raise my rate?

A single at-fault accident can raise a premium by 30–50%, and it can cost you California's Good Driver Discount for several years. Carriers weigh accidents differently, though, so the carrier that was cheapest before an accident often isn't afterward. That is a good time to have us compare the market.

Should I drop collision coverage on an older car?

A common rule of thumb is to consider it when your yearly collision premium is more than 10% of the car's value. If collision costs $800 a year on a car worth $6,000, you are paying about 13% of its value annually. Whether to drop it also depends on whether you could replace the car from savings, and we're happy to walk through the math with you.

Will shopping for car insurance affect my credit?

No. California does not allow insurers to use your credit score to price auto insurance, so comparing quotes has no effect on your credit. Your driving record, the car, where it is garaged and how much you drive are what set the price.
