Sacramento Businesses We Work With
Contractors and trades
New-home growth across Elk Grove, Natomas, Folsom and Placer County keeps general contractors, electricians, plumbers, HVAC, roofers and specialty trades busy. We handle the CSLB license bond, the workers' comp certificate, and the liability limits builders and homeowners ask for. Contractor insurance and CSLB rules →
Firms with state and city contracts
Sacramento is a government town, and consultants, vendors and service firms that work for public agencies are asked for certificates of insurance before the contract starts. We read the insurance section with you and set up the limits and additional insured endorsements it calls for.
Shops, restaurants and offices
Retail stores, restaurants, salons and professional offices from Midtown to the strip centers on Sunrise and Auburn Boulevards usually fit a business owner's policy that combines liability and property. For a building you own or major equipment, we look at commercial property coverage separately.
Landscapers, gardeners and tree trimmers
We write business owner's policies for landscaping, gardening and tree-care businesses, from a one-truck maintenance route to a crew doing removals. Liability for the work on clients' properties, coverage for your equipment, commercial auto for trucks and trailers, and workers' comp for your crew, all from one agent.
Vans, trucks and delivery
Work vehicles on I-80, Highway 50 and I-5 need commercial auto, not a personal policy. Employees who run errands in their own cars need hired and non-owned auto, so the business is covered if they have an accident on the clock.
Home-based businesses
Consultants, bookkeepers, online sellers and others working from a spare room or garage usually find their homeowners policy covers little or nothing of the business. A small policy closes the gap. Home-based business insurance →
Some businesses need specialist markets, such as cannabis operations, large trucking fleets or high-risk professional work. If yours is one of them, we'll tell you plainly and point you in the right direction.
The Building Blocks of a Sacramento Business Policy
Pays when a customer, visitor or member of the public is hurt, or their property is damaged, because of your work or premises. It's the first thing a landlord, a builder or a public agency will ask to see on your certificate.
Bundles liability with coverage for your equipment, stock and improvements to a leased space, and usually replaces lost income while you're closed after a fire or other covered loss. We write BOPs for small businesses of every kind, from offices and shops to landscapers, gardeners and tree trimmers, and it usually costs less than buying the pieces separately.
Mandatory from your first hire. The premium is set by payroll and each employee's job classification, and a misclassified role can mean overpaying, or a large bill at audit. Workers' comp for small businesses →
Commercial auto for anything titled to or driven for the business, plus an umbrella that sits over your auto, liability and employer's liability policies when a larger contract asks for higher limits.

What insurance does a small business in Sacramento need?
Most Sacramento small businesses start with general liability, which covers injuries and property damage you cause to others. If you have equipment, inventory or a space you lease or own, a business owner's policy (BOP) combines liability with business property. California requires workers' compensation as soon as you have an employee, and vehicles used for work need commercial auto. We'll look at what your business actually does and tell you which of these you need.
Can a landscaping, gardening or tree-trimming business get a business owner's policy?
Yes. We write business owner's policies for small businesses of every kind, including landscapers, gardeners and tree trimmers, not only offices and storefronts. A BOP gives you liability for the work you do on clients' properties plus coverage for your business property in one policy. Tell us exactly what work you do, because tree work is rated differently from mowing and maintenance, and we'll add commercial auto for your trucks and trailers and workers' comp for your crew.
Is workers' compensation required in California if I only have one employee?
Yes. Under California Labor Code section 3700, the requirement starts with your first employee, whether that person works full-time or a few hours a week. A business caught without coverage faces stop-work orders and penalties, and the owner can be held personally responsible for an injured employee's medical bills and lost wages.
What insurance do I need for a state or city contract in Sacramento?
Public contracts usually ask for a certificate of insurance showing general liability, commercial auto and workers' compensation at stated limits, and often an endorsement naming the agency as an additional insured. The exact requirements are in the insurance section of your contract and vary from one contract to the next. Send us that section and we'll match your coverage to it before you sign.
What insurance and bonds does a California contractor need?
To hold a California license, a contractor files a $25,000 license bond with the CSLB (up from $15,000 since January 1, 2023) and either a workers' compensation certificate or an exemption for having no employees. LLC licensees also need liability insurance by law. In practice, Sacramento builders and homeowners will ask for proof of general liability before you start, so we set up the bond and the policy at the same time.
How much does small business insurance cost in Sacramento?
It depends mostly on what you do, your revenue and payroll, the vehicles you use and your claims history. An office or small shop on a business owner's policy is usually at the low end; contractors, businesses with employees on job sites, and anyone with work vehicles pay more. Because we compare 20+ carriers, the same business can see very different prices, which is why it pays to have an independent agent shop it.
